Metaphor
“you are just like the moon”
Tenor: You, his lover
Vehicle: the moon, shining light
Associative Realm: Only light when it’s dark outside
Vehicle Associations: Big, provides direction, lightens up your world
Meanings highlighted: she guides him through life
Meanings masked: without him he would be lost, and blind
1. The significance of him associating this girl in his life to the moon is telling people that without this girl he would be lost. He is saying how his world would be dark without her. Also, throughout most of his life, she has been the one to guide him through it when it gets “dark” or times get rough.
2. The metaphor of using his loved one to the moon is effective enough for him to get his point across. He could also use the sun if he wanted, but I think what he is trying to get across the most is when times get tough in his life, she is always the one to be there for him when he falls. She is the one to help him when he is blind. I feel like if he used the sun it would make him seem like he is “blind” all the time, or constantly having a rough time. I like how he used the moon because every day it gets dark, and every day the moon comes out and is there. The moon never ceases to fail anyone; the moon is always there, whether it’s full, half, or a sliver.
